City launches Everett Essentials civic academy program

Everett Essentials for Newsflash

EVERETT – Everett residents are invited to participate in Everett Essentials, the City’s first-ever civic academy. Classes start in September, and will offer students a unique opportunity to learn about City operations and services directly from City staff.

“We’ve heard from community members that they want to know more about their local government, including how they can effectively engage in our processes and programs,” said Meghan Pembroke, communications director. “Everett Essentials is a chance to get an interactive, behind-the-scenes look at what we do and how we do it, and to learn from experts in each department.”

The academy includes topics like Everett history and demographics, public safety, government structure, community services and Everett’s future. Students will have a chance to tour City facilities and participate in interactive exercises designed to give them an in-depth understanding of City operations and how they can be a part of local government decisions and projects.

Classes begin Sept. 25 and run through Nov. 13. Most sessions will be held on Monday from 6-9 p.m., with two Saturday field trips scheduled.

Classes are limited to 30 students and priority will be given to applicants who are new to civic engagement. Tuition is $50, and financial assistance is available. For details and a course application, visit www.everettwa.gov/everettessentials. Applications are due Tuesday, Aug. 15.
